POINT-of-WORK:  Prescriptive Performance Support

Point-of-Work Dynamics

In any industry that has multiple diverse workflows and processes with many steps and roles tasked with execution, there seems to be consensus that “one-size-fits-all” training is not a sustainable solution. Training of that nature cannot be targeted enough to reach the Point-of-Work where actual performance takes place. A logical solution involves enabling access to performance support in the workflow. I offer this question – What happens when our performance support solutions carry the same “one-size-fits-all” characteristics? (more…)

POINT-of-WORK:  The Connected Worker and Analytics

When I first heard the phrase “Connected Worker” a question surfaced, “Connected to What?” The obvious answer was consistent to the latest innovation called Workflow Learning. If we need to connect workers to their workflows, the most appropriate connections would involve moments of need in the workflow at a number of worker discrete Points-of-Work. The words “worker discrete” are significant because that connection must be lock-step with task-centric and role-specific individual worker requirements. To me, that implies one-size-fits-all training solutions can only ever be a fraction of what is required…

POINT-OF-WORK:  Pushing the Stone

Point-of-Work Dynamics

Yesterday I jumped into a post by @BobMosher at his request along with a number of other professionals I admire and respect. The nature of the post was a lament regarding the difficulty of breaking through the long-held traditions of L&D’s default to training solutions to boost learning and performance. Several comments likened the effort to pushing a boulder up hill for years with only limited success. Here is a thought I offered in a separate post late yesterday afternoon… (more…)

POINT-of-WORK:  A Ground Hog’s Perspective

By having a birthday on February 2nd one experiences a unique Ground Hog Day every year, and every year the same question surfaces, “Did you see your shadow today?” Not Punxsutawney Phil…me…did I see my shadow? I will say this about that…Stand down, pilgrims, let me put this all to rest. Here are the truths regarding the infamous conditions that foretell the remaining blight of winter: See the shadow – only six more weeks of winter Don’t see the shadow – only six more weeks of winter You’re welcome…return to…

POINT-of-WORK:  Using an Alignment Discovery Cascade for Pre-Design Reconnaissance

Point-of-Work Dynamics

It seems I read too many black ops books and look at missions from a tactical perspective before nailing down an actionable strategy to move forward. No Delta Force team moves to execute on a leadership request on a mission without completing a thorough and comprehensive reconnaissance effort first. We (L&D) could gain considerable insight into an effective design strategy if we recon the mission intended to render an effective solution. Too often we receive a request for training and then go in “guns blazing” with Articulate solutions. What should…

POINT-of-WORK:  Using Connected Worker Impacts to Mine Data-Driven Insights

Point-of-Work Dynamics

A recent Article by Accenture “Change What’s Possible for Your Business” reveals a compelling need to transform our approach to generating sustained performance. Their article states “Although 90% of today’s businesses have adopted cloud, only one third are achieving the anticipated ROI. The most advanced companies understand that while cloud sets you up with next-level computing power and access to new kinds of data in the right quantity and quality, AI is the bridge to convert that data into business value.” Accenture refers to this value add as Applied Intelligence…

POINT-of-WORK:  Impacting the Connected Worker

Point-of-Work Dynamics

Despite thirty plus years in the corporate learning space I am sensing an overwhelming demand to reiterate the critical nature of shifting emphasis to a post-training ground zero - Point-of-Work. If you’ve read any of my postings of the last several years on the blog at my website – Living in Learning – you will find evidence of cross-industry applicability to performance solution design concepts that front-end training development. I refer to the Point-of-Work Assessment Methodology as a pre-design discovery event. Why “pre-design”? As a performance consultant at the core,…

Point-of-Work:  Effectively Connecting Our Workforce to Their Workflows

Over the last few months I have read countless articles touting the need for improving workforce engagement. Given the “sky-is-falling” lament due to the Great Resignation it makes one wonder how epic is our collective failure. Are we failing or is this a long overdue cross-industry correction? Are we embracing this self-inflicted down-sizing? Are we hearing the urgent message to do more with less? Are we recognizing we need to do a better job with enabling stronger engagement with our remaining workforce? Funny thing how failure can be an urgent…

Point-of-Work:   Convergence Shift to Workflow Performance

Over the last several years, I have written about the concept of convergence; specifically, convergence of learning with work. Emphasis was placed on assets Learning & Development (L&D) produced to enable performance support closer to actual work. Workflow Learning is the more current manifestation of convergence and is a new rallying point for L&D. My fear is that there is potential that L&D may be saddled with a blind spot that will not fully optimize solutions integrating newer technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) directly into workflows. Does this negate the…

The Thickness of Relationship

The Thickness of Relationship Is every castaway someone marooned on a deserted island? It is the first image that comes to mind for me; however one can be a castaway who has been cast away in the midst of a thriving population. This circumstance can be precursor to depression if not addressed by finding and maintaining meaningful relationships with the Spirit and others more worldly. Both are essential to remain whole. I found one such worldly opportunity one morning on my routine walk. I did not recognize the potential for…
