Boxed in By Technology?

Have you ever noticed how entrenched technology…and even some methodology…are accepted as the rule or the standard and innovation around those rules and standards get kind of…locked down? Even so, being in the “locked box” of technology, some innovation does indeed take place, but often it never exceeds the limitations of the box in which it’s locked down. After surviving in the L&D profession for over thirty years, I continue to ponder what is it going to take to trip the trigger that deploys the training air bag? C’mon, man! We’ve tried everything known to humans so far…we gamify, we MOOC, we micro, we burst, we space, we go virtual, we go mobile, we asynch, bi-synch, tri-synch, and…and…and it’s still training, and we continue to follow the same road map to achieve the most effective training outcomes using myriad methodologies and technologies. How many times will we endure the collision with a proven reality…yes…a documented…self-inflicted reality…at levels 1 & 2…that training, in and of itself, only drives potential? Read more…

Evolving ISD Adoption for a Performance Paradigm

Maybe a better title would posture “performance think” instead of “performance paradigm”. Even better, what if the “I” in “Instructional Systems Design” was changed to “Intentional Systems Design”? Am I suggesting the application of lipstick on the traditional ISD pig, or something radically different? Yes! Both! We see many articles these days lamenting the shortfall of employee engagement in the best efforts to develop and deliver compelling options to learn. L&D responds with shorter learning events. We gamify, and we “MOOC-ify”, and we mobilize, and there’s nothing wrong with any of these attempts to engage our learners in learning. Could it be we’re chasing the wrong rabbit? Is Our Training Paradigm an Unbeaten Dead Horse?

Maybe a better question might be…How can you beat a dead horse if you don’t realize it’s dead yet? I’m convinced the training paradigm is one dead horse and many of us are beating the stuffing out of it…or soon will be after discovering that it is indeed dead. And we will keep whaling away rather than take the hint that beating on it won’t change the outcome. Time to move on to a different approach. A new horse?
