POINT-of-WORK:  Navigating Digital Transformation with Transformational Change

A few years ago I was blessed to speak at an IQPC Talent Management conference on a topic of “Change Leadership – When Change Management Is Not Enough.” My speaking invitation came from a post titled “Managing Change or Leading Change: Does It Matter?”  I guess they liked the post and topic idea because IQPC interviewed me prior to the conference. The post is hyperlinked above and contains the interview transcript they provided. I share all this because it is the perfect lead in to navigating transformative initiatives be they…

POINT-of-WORK:  Prescriptive Performance Support

Point-of-Work Dynamics

In any industry that has multiple diverse workflows and processes with many steps and roles tasked with execution, there seems to be consensus that “one-size-fits-all” training is not a sustainable solution. Training of that nature cannot be targeted enough to reach the Point-of-Work where actual performance takes place. A logical solution involves enabling access to performance support in the workflow. I offer this question – What happens when our performance support solutions carry the same “one-size-fits-all” characteristics? (more…)

POINT-OF-WORK:  Pushing the Stone

Point-of-Work Dynamics

Yesterday I jumped into a post by @BobMosher at his request along with a number of other professionals I admire and respect. The nature of the post was a lament regarding the difficulty of breaking through the long-held traditions of L&D’s default to training solutions to boost learning and performance. Several comments likened the effort to pushing a boulder up hill for years with only limited success. Here is a thought I offered in a separate post late yesterday afternoon… (more…)

POINT-of-WORK:  Using Connected Worker Impacts to Mine Data-Driven Insights

Point-of-Work Dynamics

A recent Article by Accenture “Change What’s Possible for Your Business” reveals a compelling need to transform our approach to generating sustained performance. Their article states “Although 90% of today’s businesses have adopted cloud, only one third are achieving the anticipated ROI. The most advanced companies understand that while cloud sets you up with next-level computing power and access to new kinds of data in the right quantity and quality, AI is the bridge to convert that data into business value.” Accenture refers to this value add as Applied Intelligence…

POINT-of-WORK:  Impacting the Connected Worker

Point-of-Work Dynamics

Despite thirty plus years in the corporate learning space I am sensing an overwhelming demand to reiterate the critical nature of shifting emphasis to a post-training ground zero - Point-of-Work. If you’ve read any of my postings of the last several years on the blog at my website – Living in Learning – you will find evidence of cross-industry applicability to performance solution design concepts that front-end training development. I refer to the Point-of-Work Assessment Methodology as a pre-design discovery event. Why “pre-design”? As a performance consultant at the core,…

Point-of-Work:  Effectively Connecting Our Workforce to Their Workflows

Over the last few months I have read countless articles touting the need for improving workforce engagement. Given the “sky-is-falling” lament due to the Great Resignation it makes one wonder how epic is our collective failure. Are we failing or is this a long overdue cross-industry correction? Are we embracing this self-inflicted down-sizing? Are we hearing the urgent message to do more with less? Are we recognizing we need to do a better job with enabling stronger engagement with our remaining workforce? Funny thing how failure can be an urgent…

“Status Quomentum” – A Hidden Core Performance Restrainer

Yes, I have just coined a new phrase to highlight a common affliction within organizations often found lurking behind “resistance to change.” What parts of the organization? All of them actually, but...the most capable entity in position to overcome status quomentum is Learning and Development (L&D)...or it should be. In fact, L&D has unfortunately played the role of perpetuating the deeply embedded myth driving status quomentum – Training Drives Performance. Because of that myth our operational stakeholders look to L&D (referring to us as the Training Department) for resolutions to…

POINT-of-WORK: Ground Zero for Workforce Transformation

Point-of-Work Dynamics

Considering most businesses have a distributed WFH workforce there are multiple transformations that must take place ranging from Cultural/Environmental changes to People/Capabilities; Workflows/Processes; Resources/Information; Systems/Technology; Impact/Analytics; and most importantly, Change Leadership challenges. Easy to see that we face a significant journey to adopt and sustain effective workforce transformation. My question is simple – Where do we begin? (more…)

POINT-of-WORK: Is It a Destination or a Discipline?

Point-of-Work Dynamics

The short answer is YES! Arriving at a destination has a connotation of finality or completion, but what happens when the characteristics of the “destination” are dynamic and influenced by continuous change? Welcome to the world of Learning & Development (L&D); a world where we struggle to optimize workforce performance outcomes with static solutions and technology in a Dynamic Learning Performance Ecosystem. We (L&D) see it. Our operational stakeholders see it…and are asking for different solutions that show measurable impact to the bottom-line. The question becomes one of are we…

Digital Adoption Solutions (DAS) Technology Has an Identity…Finally…Now What?

Point-of-Work Dynamics

About two years ago I contacted Gartner regarding a Magic Quadrant for Performance Support; they had none…and no immediate plans stating they were not in “that space”. I suggested at the time that if they were serious about being in the learning space, they should include performance support. I doubt if my suggestion was the catalyst, but they just released a document for Digital Adoption Solutions - DAS platforms in the context of Sales Effectiveness and provided a list of vendors. Sort of… (more…)
