Anatomy of Digital Performance Support (DPS) Integration

Digital Performance Support (DPS) represents an evolution of what we’ve known as Electronic Performance Support (EPS) and the technology that provides it, Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS). So…what has evolved about EPS making it worthy of calling it something else? Is DPS just lipstick on EPS? Definitely not! Here’s a link to a recent blog post by Mike Graham, CEO of Epilogue Systems that describes DPS in a little more detail. Cloud-based DPS opens a whole set of doors for driving sustained workforce capability at the Point of Work. (more…)

Performance Support: Just Gimme Three Clicks!

We see many articles these days lamenting the shortfall of employee engagement in the best efforts to develop and deliver compelling options to learn. L&D responds with shorter learning events. We gamify, and we “MOOC-ify”, and we mobilize, and there’s nothing wrong with any of these attempts to engage our learners in learning. Could it be we’re chasing the wrong rabbit? Or maybe we’re chasing the right rabbit but there is a more effective way? (more…)

Free Agent – Hurled Through the Window of Opportunity

Boss: “I have some unfortunate news.” Me: (thinking to myself) ‘Here we go…again…’ Boss: “Your position has been eliminated effective a week from Friday.” Me: “Hmmm, something tells me this is not a joke.” Boss: “I’m sorry. This is no joke.” Bah-dump-tssshhh! (Not sure that’s the correct spelling for a rim shot, but that’s the audio clip that played in my head.) (more…)

Readiness – Set – Go: Pursuing a Sustainable EPS Strategy

The path to shifting a long-held training paradigm to a holistic learning and performance paradigm is not a task for the faint-of-heart. Trust me on this…I have the scars to prove it. The greatest challenge I encountered in my own journey reveals there is more Change Leadership related implications than anything else. To compound that challenge, defining a “how to” road map is a tough nut to crack because every single deployment…then implementation…then fully enabling sustained adoption… is unique to the organization making the climb to the summit. So…do we…

70:20:10? Or Is It…85:12:3?

<Rant> To answer the question suggested by the title I offer another question – “Who gives a rip?” – as long as the end-game drives sustained workforce capability. The correct ratio is only correct if the end-game is reached. (more…)

“Sustainable EPS Discipline?” Or “One-and-Done?”

Recently, I learned that it takes approximately 30 square miles of ocean for a loaded oil tanker to reverse course 180 degrees. That seems like a lot of ocean, but then, that’s a lot of boat to turn around – and a lot of momentum related to the existing course direction. It’s funny how momentum proves to be the primary challenge and source of resistance when standing in the way to a change in direction. While 30 square miles represents useless trivia, the significance and parallels represented by factors of…

Rant: Is My Boomer Showing?

<Rant Alert> Sorry, but this had to happen sooner than later, and I don’t expect a tidal wave of agreement...a few ripples will do. Even early warning signs of a tsunami are as subtle as the tide slowly receding from the shore. Yeah, this is about Performance Support…you expected something different from me? Ain’t happenin’! I’m done filling sandbags to protect the institution of training. You’ll find me on a board swimming out to catch the wave of root causes. (more…)

Define the “DO” First

The title of this post represents the core concept behind effectively adopting a Performance Paradigm as opposed to a Training Paradigm where we often chase the "KNOW" as our first priority. Rest easy, friends because there may yet be a storyboard in the process...and then again...maybe not. (more…)

Call It Anything But Performance Support

It’s known among my closest friends that I will do stupid tricks for a platter of onion rings. It’s that passion that blinded me to something that ordinarily would have scared me off when a fresh order of calamari was placed on the table in front of me. It was a group dinner kind of thing and somebody ordered appetizers without my knowledge. I popped what appeared to be an onion ring in my mouth and thought to myself, “Hmmm, that’s a bit chewy.” (more…)

Red Wire/Blue Wire & the Explosive Failure of Training

The down-lights were all turned on and illuminating the island in the middle of our kitchen when my wife turned the corner and saw me immersed in a creative moment. The red wire had just been inserted into the sausage when she stopped in her tracks; hands firmly planted on her hips with that this-better-be-good look on her face; and she let fly, “What the heck are you doing?” (more…)
